How to Participate in 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting
How to Pray
Prayer is like spiritual breathing—essential for growing as disciples of Christ. As we meditate on God’s Word, we breathe in His promises and purposes. Through prayer, we respond, breathing out our adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.
This guide includes daily passages from The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s gospel, along with prayer prompts to guide you in applying Jesus’ teachings to your life. Over the 21 days, you’ll pray for your spiritual growth, our church family, and the fulfillment of the Great Commission through us. Let’s trust His promises together as we seek Him in prayer!
Here are some tips to make the most of this season of prayer:
•Set a Time and Place: Dedicate a specific time each day to meet with God in prayer. Find a quiet space where you can focus without distractions.
•Keep Your Focus Handy: Use the Scripture and prayer points in the guide as fuel for your prayers. Write them on index cards, post them on social media, make them your phone screensaver, or find other creative ways to keep them in view throughout the day. Invite others to join you in praying.
•Journal Your Prayers: Consider writing down your prayers each day in the space provided in the guide. This practice allows you to look back and see how God is working in response to your prayers.
•Pray with Others: Meet with friends, your community group, and even your family to pray together during this time.
•Meditate on Jesus’ Teachings: Don’t just skim the verses—reflect deeply on the words of Christ in The Sermon on the Mount. Let His words shape your thoughts and actions, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in living them out.
How to Fast
Why should we fast? Fasting helps us turn away from worldly distractions and set our minds and hearts fully on God. It’s not about manipulating God to answer our prayers but about acknowledging our dependence on Him. Fasting reveals how much we rely on our fleshly desires and humbles us as we draw closer to the Lord.
As you consider fasting, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Ask God how He’s leading you during this time. Whether you fast for one day, several days, or all 21 days, the goal is to humble yourself before God and grow closer to Him.
Here are some types of fasts you might consider:
•Selective Fast: Limit your diet to certain foods, such as fruits and vegetables (commonly called a “Daniel fast”).
•Partial Fast: Refrain from eating during specific times of the day, such as fasting from one meal or from sunrise to sunset.
•Complete Fast: Abstain from all food and drink only liquids for a set period.
•Non-Food Fast: If fasting from food isn’t possible, consider fasting from something else, such as social media and TV.
