Ephesians: Life Together In Christ | The High Calling of Marriage (5:21-33)

Ephesians 5:21-33

Because of the paradigm shift we experience as regenerate believers, we are to reject selfishness and pride.  This profoundly changes the way Christians behave in relationships:

  • Out of reverence for Christ, Christians submit to one another)

Gal 5:13 | Phil 2:3 | Rom 12:10 | 1 Pet 5:5 | Heb 13:17 | Gen 3:1-6 | Titus 3:1

“We pay a price to give our lives to a real community.  We lose some of our space, time, and freedom to do as we please.  But the Bible tells us to submit to one another.  That requires us to adjust, to fit in, to always look for the win/win.” – Ray Ortlund

  • Out of submission to Christ, Christian wives submit to their husbands.)

Rom 10:9-10 |  1 Pet 3:3-6 | Phil 2:3 | 1 Cor 16:13-14

  • Following Jesus’ example of love for His Church, Christian husbands sacrificially love their wives.)

Phil 2:5-8 | Isa 53:5 | Col 3:19 | Gal 3:26-29 | 1 Pet 3:7 | 1 Cor 7:2-5

Marriage marked by humility, selflessness,  and obedience to God’s order is a powerful symbol of Christ’s redemption of His people.

  • Christ’s goal in loving the church: our sanctification and His glory

Titus 3:5 | Heb 10:10, 14 | 1 Cor 6:11

  • Husbands’ highest goal in loving their wives: their sanctification and Christ’s glory

Eph 5:19-20 | Heb 10:24 | 2 Cor 11:2 | Col 1:21-22 | John 17:17 | 1 Pet 3:3-4 | 1 Thess 4:11

  • Wives’ highest goal in marital submission: Christ’s glory

1 Pet 3:1-2
